Google selects Full Health Medical for its acceleration programme!

Full Health Medical has fended off stiff competition from Europe's best startups to be selected for Google's "Adopt A Startup" initiative, which will be launching at their European HQ in Dublin later this month. As part of the 12-week programme Full Health will work with a team of Google Digital Consultants to boost their digital strategy.

Previous winners of this competition include FoodCloud, the tremendously successful Irish company that redistributes food surpluses for people who need it, and Jobbio, the brand and talent recruiting platform.

Full Health Medical's head office becomes Google's latest Tech Hub Partner

Dogpatch Labs  - home to Full Health's head office - has today been revealed as Google's latest Tech Hub Partner. Located in Dublin's docklands, Dogpatch is a space that houses some of Europe's most exciting young companies, and has fast become a key player in Dublin's burgeoning start-up scene. The partnership was announced at an event this morning attended by Google representatives and Minister for Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation, Mr Richard Bruton. 
The deal puts new and exciting resources at the fingertips of companies who work out of Dogpatch, such as Full Health Medical. These include mentorship and workshops from Dublin Googlers, workspace at 20+ other Tech Hub Partners around the world (incl. San Francisco, Tel Aviv, London), Google product offers and more. 
Minister for Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation Mr Richard Bruton this morning said:
"We have great entrepreneurs in Ireland - 2/3 of all new jobs in the Irish economy are created by start-ups and this project will provide more support for entrepreneurs at Dogpatch".

Our New Recruit: Chief Medical Officer

After a thrilling year studying a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at INSEAD business school in France, I’m delighted to join Full Health Medical as Chief Medical Officer. As a medical doctor with business education, I look forward to being part of this fast-growing company that has been leading the way in digital preventative health in the UK & Ireland. I’m a sincere believer that many of the modern challenges in healthcare must be tackled using innovative IT solutions, and that’s exactly what Full Health have been doing since they entered the market in 2012. 

Full Health’s award-winning software has been central to the company's success, and I think this is the key reason it is now used extensively by multinational corporations, government organizations, pharmacy chains, private clinics and other healthcare service providers. Our people-friendly medical reports are designed to engage employees in long-term behavioral change, resulting in a happier and more motivated workforce. For employers, this translates into significantly increased employee productivity and reduced absenteeism rates. Increasingly, large employers are seen as a crucial player in tackling big public health issues such as obesity, diabetes, mental health problems and heart disease. Year on year, we are thankfully seeing companies continue to make substantial investment toward the health and well-being of their workforce, and hope to see this trend persist into the future.

Key Points from National Workplace Wellbeing Day

Organised by the Nutrition and Health Foundation (NHF), the first National Workplace Wellbeing Day took place on Friday 27th of March.

Overall the event was a huge success with a fantastic attendance from private and public organisations. It was great to hear the diversity of initiatives and approaches being taken to improve the health of the workforce. So what were the take home messages?

For me, Aramark's Frank Gleeson's point was the most important: while all these fragmented activities are going on under the guise of wellness, there is no data available to measure and assess their impact. As Frank said "Evidence shows it's working, but harder data is needed."

I was delighted to hear this comment, as over the past three years working with the Full Health multidisciplinary medical team, we have painstakingly focused on the building blocks of running successful 3-5 year wellness programmes centred on preventative health and measuring the return. All too often, valuable data is lost or is not analysed with events that are apparently unconnected and often expensive. This is in an age when everything is connected!

  • People need to see value before engaging. Create demand before supply from a financial perspective. BOI now have 11,000 people across 500 sites engaged in their "Be at your Best Programme"
  • Banks "Be at your Best Programme" started with no budget. It's ultimately about customers by helping BOI staff to be at their best in terms of mind and professionalism
  • "Aspire, Inspire, Perspire" is the mantra and programme is centered on body, mind and career
  • Described the "Be at your Best Programme" as bottom up through staff and un-bank like
  • Wellbeing programmes can help change organisational behaviour & culture

  • Provided an overview of Teleflex's two week programme encompassing health checks and various activities that employees can choose from

In summary, initiating a culture of wellness has a guaranteed payback for employers. The Q&A session included comments such as more supports for employers to introduce initiatives and more events like National Wellbeing day....more work for organiser in chief Dr. Muireann Cullen!

Ireland's first National Workplace Wellbeing Day is an initiative of the Food and Drink Industry Ireland, part of Ibec, and is being organised by the Nutrition and Health Foundation.

So why is the workplace a great place to champion wellness?

Approximately one third of adult life is spent at work. Employment is a key social determinant of health, and the workplace is recognised as a key avenue for health promotion.

This has led to a shift in attitudes around workplace wellness, with employers expanding the concept of employee health beyond conditions acquired in the workplace to any condition which could potentially impact on employee performance.

Blood Pressure

In 2007, nearly 852,000 adults in the Republic of Ireland (25.1%) had high blood pressure. By 2020, this is expected to rise to over 1,192,000 (28.3%). This represents a 40% increase in the number of people affected - an additional 341,000 adults - in less than 15 years.

Incidence of Stroke

Similarly, by 2020 the number of adults in Ireland with clinically diagnosed stroke is expected to rise to almost 29,000 per year - this represents a 27% increase in 10 years!


In 2010, the rate of clinically diagnosed diabetes for all adults in Ireland was 3.2% (106,000 people). By 2020 the rate of clinically diagnosed diabetes among all adults is expected to rise to 3.8% (136,000 people). This will represent a 28% increase in 10 years.

Recognition of the growing problem of chronic diseases and of the fact that these diseases are caused by a build up of risk factors over many years, has led stakeholders to focus on the importance of prevention and to look at new ways of targeting those at risk.

Full Health Medical selected for Global Challenge Cup Competition

We are delighted to announce that Full Health Medical has been selected to take part in a major competition aimed to identify the most promising start-ups in the health sector worldwide.

The Challenge Cup 2015 is run by  US based startup incubator 1776. It is a global competition that spans 16 cities in 11 countries to identify the most promising startups with the best ideas to solve the world's biggest challenges.

Full Health Medical, was one of a number of companies shortlisted from more than 5,000 applicants for the Challenge Cup 2015. We will be competing on February 27th in Dublin.

If successful in Dublin, Full Health Medical will have the chance of winning a place at the week long Challenge Festival in May in Washington D.C. in the US to compete for up to  $650,000 in prizes. This event will convene the top 64 startups from the 16 regional Challenge Cup competitions. It also provides the unique opportunity to connect with mentors, corporate partners, policymakers, and potential investors.

The Challenge Cup 2015 competition aims to identify startups that are compelling, world changing, highly scalable and that aim to make tangible differences in peoples’ lives.

Full Health Medical was founded by Paul McCarthy and his wife Dr Ann Shortt who works as a consultant in emergency medicine.

The company provides user-friendly health screening software that instantly combines medical test results and questionnaires to produce personalised health reports, accessible to the patient or employee on any internet-connected device.
